Jovan Adepo (‘10) is an impressive BSU Bulldog who plays the son of celebrity actors Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in the film, “Fences,” based on Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play by the same name. Released on December 25, 2016, the movie attracted Oscar buzz even before it went into production earlier last year.
Adepo was born in Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, England to James, a British police guard and Adelola, a student in the city of Oxford. With his mother an avid theatregoer and his father a movie buff, Adepo was exposed to electrifying performances from an early age.
After receiving a B.A. in political science and philosophy from Bowie State University, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. Since arriving in L.A., Adepo has built quite a resume for himself, playing a wide range of roles on both the stage and in front of the camera. Prior to joining the cast of Fences, Adepo starred in several independent films, including “The Youth” (2015) and “Bruise” (2014), as well as the short film “Sandbox” (2012). He is a cast regular on the HBO series “The Leftovers,” which is set to return in April 2017.
Continuing his love of theatre, Adepo is a member of the prestigious Robey Theatre Company in L.A., and appeared in their critically acclaimed production of “The Magnificent Dunbar Hotel.” He has studied acting under the tutelage of a variety of notable instructors, including Dianne Hull of the Actors Studio.
